Wang Guosong Education Foundation

Mr. Wang Guosong (1902-1983), a famous scientist and educator, is a grand master in the field of Electrical Engineering in China, and a co-founder of Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE). He graduated from Zhejiang Industrial School (a technical school of Zhejiang University) in 1925, and became a teaching assistant in the school. In 1930, he went to the United States, and received MS in 1931 and Ph.D. in 1933 both from the gradute school of Cornell University. Mr. Wang went back to China in Aug 1933, and became an associate professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Zhejiang University. He was later appointed the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Dean of the Engineering Faculty, Vice President, and Acting President of Zhejaing University. Noted for profound learning and meticulous scholarship, Mr. Wang devoted all his life to promoting the development of the Engineering Faculty, the Department of Electrical Engineering of Zhejiang University, and the University itself. Great contribution was meanwhile made by him to have cultivated high-level scientific and technical talents in Electrical Engineering, which won him high reputation both at home and abroad.

Named after his honor, the Wang Guosong Education Foundation was co-founded in November 1996 by Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Provincial Power Industry Bureau. As a way to commemorate the outstanding achievements by Mr. Wang, the Foundation aimed at supporting electrical engineering education and thereby train more outstanding talents for the society. It has received enthusiastic support from cooperative partners nationwide, and alumni and friends both internationally and domestically. Until the end of 2010, the Foundation has received donations of over 4.52 million yuan from 55 organizations and 404 individuals.

Prof Han Zhenxiang, the former president of Zhejiang University, serves as Chairman of the Foundation Board (the fourth). Mr. Zhao Yiliang (Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Electric Power Co., Ltd.), Prof Xu Dehong (Deputy Director of Faculty of Engineering, Zhejiang University), Mr Chen Jimin (the former General Manager of Zhejiang Electric Power) act as the Vice Chairman of the Board. Its board members mainly come from donors of the Fundation.

In accordance with bylaws of the Foundation, value-added revenue of the Fund should be exclusively used for its designated purposes: mainly for supporting educational development of College of Electrical Engineering, Zhejiang University; awarding outstanding full-time undergraduate students, graduate students and staff members for their excellent academic achievement and job performance. So far, the honor has been given to over 1520 students and staffs.
