Department of Applied Electronics

Department of Applied Electronics was established in the year of 1972, and draws students and researchers by its outstanding reputation both at home and abroad. Relying on power electronics, the first discipline of such kind in China, and Institute of VLSI which was set up in 2000, the department provides its students with academic programs of the related areas in power electronics, integrated circuits and systems, electronic system design automation, electronic technology and systems. It intends to cultivate students into compound high-level engineering and management talents equipped with solid foundation, extensive knowledge, and innovation capabilities. It also prepares students for tomorrow’s leaders with spirit of truth-seeking and international competitiveness.

Besides Institute of Power Electronics and Institute of VLSI, the department consists of the only National Key Laboratory of Power Electronics in China, National Engineering Center for Applied Power Electronics, National IC Design Industrialization Base which is enlisted among the first group of such kind approved by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Provincial Key Laboratory of Integrated Circuit Design. The department is entitled to confer both doctoral and master degrees in power electronics, and circuit and system, and has the post-doctoral research station of electrical engineering. Power electronics, rated in 1988 among the first group of national key disciplines, covers two undergraduate specialties- electronic information engineering and electronic information science and technology.

The department has a strong faculty who are dedicated to teaching and research. In total, there are 37 full-time staffs with 11 professors and 12 associate professors (associate research fellow). It is honored to have famous erudite senior professors such as Professor Wang Yousheng, one of the earliest members of China Academy of Engineering, and the relatively young vigorous academic research backbone such as Professor Yan Xiaolang, who has been awarded the title of National Young Specialist for Special Contribution and is the chief of the national specialist group of 863 Plan for development strategy research of integrated circuit design. It is equally known for Professor Xu Dehong, the vice chief director of China Society of Power Source, Professor He Xiangning, IEE Fellow, Professor Tan Nianxiong, the returned overseas Chinese scholar who has a great impact on integrated circuit design in the international community and Dr. Peng Fangzheng, the Guangbiao chair professor. Professor Ma Weiming, the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, also joins the department as adjunct professor.

Over the years, the department has made great contributions to the country's economic development with series of scientific researches represented by medium and high-frequency induction heating technology. The overall level of research results conducted by the department takes a leading position among its domestic counterparts, some of which have reached the international advanced level. At present, the department undertakes a large amount of scientific research projects such as key projects of National Natural Science Foundation, National 973 Projects, National 863 Projects, National 985 Projects, National Defense Research Projects, and international and regional cooperative projects.

The department has hosted many international and domestic academic conferences in recent years, and established close academic exchanges and cooperative relations with well-known universities worldwide. It has meanwhile conducted extensive exchanges and cooperation with business and government agencies. Joint laboratories are therefore established with Infineon, National Semiconductor, Sansung and other companies. Scholarships are provided by a number of international companies for students in the department. Teaching Practice Bases are established in partnership with Philips Lighting Electronics Global Development Center, Delta Energy Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and other international companies.
