The Second Flagship Seminar of FRENS Concluded in Success

The Second Flagship Seminar of FRENS, hosted by College of Electrical Engineering, came to a successful conclusion Sept.22 in Zhejiang University. Starting on Sept 20, the seminar attracted about 80 professors, phD students and experts of universities and industries from China,UK, Denmark, Japan, etc. The seminar is part of the UK-China collabrative project on “Future Reliable Renewable Energy Conversion Systems & Networks (FRENS)”, with it consortium members from 11 universities from both China and UK. Besides the sponsership from Research Councils UKRCUKChina Office and National Science Foundation of CHINA (NSFC), the seminar also received supports from industrial partners such as GE Global Research & Development Center (Shanghai) Co., LTD, Emerson Network Power Co., LTD, and Zhejiang University – Fuji Innovation Center.

Prof He Xiangning from CEE chaired the opening session of the seminar. Prof Weiwei (the executive vice dean of the college), and Prof. Ding Lijian (the Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering, NSFC) made a welcome speech respectively. The seminar focused on the topic- Understanding aging mechanisms and improving reliability in renewable energy systems, which aims to investigate the root causes and solutions regarding the unsatisfactory reliability of renewable power generation. About 20 delegates made their presentations, sharing their researches and experiences with the audience on the following aspects like aerodynamic analysis, the physical structure modeling and design, fault detection, topology and control strategy for power electronic converter, the construction and control of mini-grid system, aging mechanism and life cycle management of power electronic converters and the mechanical structure. Later in the seminar, the consortium member meeting was held to review the cooperation model, priorities and ideas of the project, and crucial problems which demanded prompt solution between China and UK side, and based on which, consensus was reached on the future development of the two sides.

Currently, in response to the increasing global energy crisis, many countries are actively engaged in developing solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy and other renewable energy systems research, among which reliability research is the key issue.The seminar provides not only an opportunity for UK and Chinese professors and PhD students to exchange their experience and ideas in their related research projects, but also draws together leading industrial partners in relevant field such as GE, Emerson, Fuji, Vestas Wind Systems and Dongfang Electric Corporation. The seminar is likely to yield in the further collaboration opportunities between researchers in the university and industrial manufactruers, and between China and UK. This will be hopefully beneficial to the economic development of both countries.
