Dr Yingchun Zhang, the assistant professor from University of Houston, offered CEE students an introduction to biomedical research carrying on in the BME Department of the Univeristy of Houston on Mar 14. According to him , the department has currently three threst areas in Neural Engineering, Imaging, and Bionanoscience (systems biology, genomics, regenerative medicine, nanoscience etc). He discussed in detail the ongoing research in the above areas and the PhD program in the department.
After receiving Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University in 2004, Dr Zhang went to the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Medical School of the University of Minnesota for postdoctoral research. In 2010, he won the honor of Career Development Award from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). He currently is the the assistant professor from BME Department at the University of Houston, a number of his research projects being funded in millions of dollars by NIH and the U.S. Natural Science Foundation. Dr Zhang focuses his research interest on bio-electromagnetics, human biological electromagnetic system modeling and simulation, and functional imaging. He has so far published over 30 papers internationally and serves as reviewers of over 20 international journals and conferences. He is also invited many times to deliver lectures by the U.S. NIH, international conferences, and well-known medical device companies. He has established close collaborative relationships with Northwestern University, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and the University of Michigan of the United States, Politecnico di Torino of Italy, Zhejiang University, and several U.S. medical device companies.
