Prof John Loughhead, executive director of the UK Energy Research Center visited EE College this Wednesday on Apr 23. He was met by Prof Wei Wei, executive dean of EE College, together with Prof Xu Dehong, vice director of Faculty of Engineering, Prof He Xiangning, the vice dean of EE College, and faculty representatives of the College.
EE heads and faculties were meeting with Prof Loughhead during his visit to the College on Apr 23.
Prof Wei first presented an overview of the College, followed by the focuses on current research areas and the College’s future trend. Prof Loughhead then gave detailed introduction as to what energy challenges UK faces in such areas as energy demand and supply, energy and the environment, energy systems, smart grid, electric vehicles, and energy saving technology. A blueprint of UK’s future energy and power development was afterward shared with EE faculties. He moved further to brief presentation of how the UK Energy Research Center works and how it cooperates with the relevant reseach institutes globalwide. The two sides showed interest during the discussion in the possibility of establishing a joint research center in future. After the meeting, Prof Loughhead visited labs of Microgrid Experimental Platform that was attached to Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Electrical Equipments & Systems on Marine Renewable Energy.
UKERC was established in April 2004 to address key controversies in the energy field through comprehensive assessments of the current state of knowledge. It is the focal point for UK research on sustainable energy, and is central to the Research Councils' Energy Programme. The centre has its headquarters at the campus of Imperial College, London, providing support to 300 researchers based in over 30 universities and research institutions across the UK. The organisation takes an independent, whole-systems approach, drawing on technical and non-technical disciplines including engineering, economics and the physical, environmental and social sciences. It helps to co-ordinate the overall UK energy research effort and acts as a bridge between the UK energy research community, the international research community, business and policymakers.
