Warm congratulations to Prof Xu Dehong from EE College, the 2016 winner of IEEE Power Electronics Society's (PELS) R. David Middlebrook Achievement Award! He is the fifth person who has ever won the honor for his leadership and contributions to power electronics technology in renewable energy systems and energy efficiency.
The R. David Middlebrook Award was established in 2011 to honor an individual who is judged to have accomplished outstanding contribution in the technical field of power electronics, within one or more subfields such as modeling & control, design-oriented analysis, development, simulation and application of electronic devices, passive components, analog sensing, and power circuits for inverters, converters and motor drives in all power levels. The award may recognize a single significant contribution such as a seminal paper or analysis method, or a series of accomplishments that together represent outstanding technical contribution. This award is presented at ECCE America every year during the Awards Ceremony.
Dr Xu has received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees respectively from Zhejiang University in China since 1989. He became a faculty member in the Power Electronics Research Institute of Zhejiang University. He has proposed several novel converter topologies and modulation/control concepts, e.g., Phase-shift plus PWM control for bidirectional DC/DC converters, Zero-Voltage-Switching SVM for three-phase Converters, weighted current damping control of the Grid inverter with LCL-filter. Dr Xu has published over 200 scientific papers in international journals and conference proceedings, six books and has owned more than 30 patents. He used to be visiting scholars in University of Tokyo in Japan, CPES of Virginia Tech in United State, and ETH inSwitzerland. Since 1996, He becomes a full professor in EE College of Zhejiang University, China. From 2009 on, he is the director of Power Electronics Research Institute at Zhejiang University.
The focus of his current research is on power conversion and control with both higher efficiency and high power quality for UPS and renewable energies, on soft switching power conversion for data centers, grid inverters and high speed drives. Further main research areas are realizing passive integration with Flexible Multi-layer Foils to improve power density of the power converter, Fuel Cell power system for data center, Super UPS by utilizing dual energy source infrastructures, and hybrid energy storage system by utilizing multiple complementary energy storage components. Dr Xu is a Fellow of the IEEE and received three Best Paper Awards of IEEE Conferences. He was at-large Adcom member of IEEE Power Electronics Society from 2006-2008. He serves as an associate editor of both IEEE transaction on power electronics and IEEE transaction on Sustainable Energy. He was General Chair of IEEE ISIE2012 at Hangzhou, IEEE PEDG2013 at Arkansas, and IEEE PEAC2014 at Shanghai. He is President of China Power supply Society since 2013.
