CCTV10 Approaches To Science: Permanent-magnet Traction Motor for High-speed Train Developed by Prof. FANG Youtong's Team

As the core of the next-generation traction drive technology for high-speed trains, permanent magnet motors are of great significance. Under the continuous support of the national plan, Professor FANG Youtong of EE College of Zhejiang University teamed with companies such as CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Co.,ltd, Times Electric Co.,Ltd, Qingdao Sifang, Co.,ltd, worked for ten years to develop a high-speed permanent-magnet traction motor for loading and unloading. Compared with conventional asynchronous traction, the high-speed train equipped with a permanent magnet motor is able to reduce energy consumption by more than 10%. Its main indicators are internationally leading. It was awarded the National Top Ten Science and Technology Progress News in 2015 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Prof. FANG Youtong,Qiushi Distinguished Professor of ZJU, panel member of "China's High-speed Train Joint Action Plan for Independent Innovation" Group jointly founded by Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Science and Technology, subject-matter expert in modern transportation of the "12th Five-Year Plan" and "863 Program" of Ministry of Science and Technology. He carried out a number of innovative researches in the traction drive field of high speed train and has achieved notable achievements. The first permanent magnet traction motor in China which is applied in the 350km/h high speed train was developed under his supervision, and the core indexes of the permanent magnet traction motor, especially in efficiency and power density, have reached the international leading level.
