From November 27thto 28th, five Ph.D. students from the College of Electrical Engineering in Zhejiang University went to Hong Kong Polytechnic University to make an academic visit.
They visited the campus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the laboratories of the Department of Electrical Engineering. The students of both sides exchanged their research contents and learned from each other.
On November 27th, the students came to Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor NIU Shuangxia warmly welcomed them and introduced the development of the Department of Electrical Engineering to them. After that, the students of Zhejiang University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University introduced their research contents respectively and discussed with each other. The Department of Electrical Engineering in Hong Kong Polytechnic University has a wide range of research topics, including photonics and smart materials, devices technology, railway engineering, power and energy systems, and power electronics. Three Ph.D. candidates in Hong Kong Polytechnic University introduced their research topics. After that, the students of Zhejiang University proposed their own questions, and then introduced their research contents.
On November 28th, Prof. NIU showed the students around the laboratories of Department of Electrical Engineering, after which the students were shown around the whole campus with an overall introduction. The Department of Electrical Engineering consists of Power Electronics Research Center, Electric Vehicle Laboratory, E.M.C. Laboratory, Electric Machine Laboratory, Power System Laboratory and Smart Materials & Systems Laboratory. During the visit, it was discovered that though there aren’t many researchers, each of them is responsible for at least one research subject alone, which reflects a higher research level in average. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University attaches great importance to providing the students with free and vast platforms for them to study and do research. Every laboratory is fully used and experiments are attached importance to, while vitality and affinity of variety can be seen everywhere in the campus.
“We warmly welcome every students from Zhejiang University to come here and pursue the degree of Ph. D. We are able to provide the students with adequate support for them to engage in research without worrying too much, or at least, about the financial problems. Though the school is still young, it’s been made great effort on postgraduate education. The general research and education abilities of the staff are rather excellent, and the talent development mechanism of the school is also well-developed.” Says Prof. NIU.
